Tissamaharama sits at a rare crossroads: national parks to the east, the ocean to the south, and two thousand years of pilgrimage history a fifteen-minute drive inland. You can do all five of these from the lake and be back for dinner.
1. Yala National Park
Twenty-five minutes from our gate, and the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world. Book the 5:30am drive; the light between six and eight is the reason photographers keep coming back.
2. Bundala National Park
Quieter, flatter, and full of water birds — greater flamingos arrive between September and March. Ideal for anyone who found Yala's jeep traffic a little busy.
Go to Yala for the leopard. Go to Bundala for the silence.
3. Kataragama
A pilgrimage town shared by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. The evening puja at around 6:30pm is one of the most affecting hours you will spend in Sri Lanka.
4. Sithulpawwa Rock Temple
A 2,200-year-old monastery on a granite outcrop inside the park boundary. Climb it late afternoon for a view that runs unbroken to the sea.
5. Kirinda Beach
Fifteen minutes south: a shrine on a rock, fishing boats hauled up on the sand, and almost nobody else. Not for swimming — the current is serious — but perfect for sunset.
