Best time of year to visit Tissamaharama

The short answer is December to early April. The long answer is more interesting, because the south has a genuinely good shoulder season that most itineraries skip.

December to April — the dry season

Still mornings, warm evenings, mirror-flat water at dawn. This is peak season for a reason: the lake is at its most photogenic and Yala's tracks are dry and fast.

May to August — green and quiet

The southwest monsoon mostly spends itself before it reaches Tissamaharama. Expect short, theatrical afternoon showers, a much greener landscape and noticeably lower rates.

Our favourite month is July: the jetty is empty, the birds are everywhere, and the light after rain is extraordinary.

September and October — plan carefully

Yala usually closes part of the park for maintenance in September, and the second inter-monsoon brings heavier rain in October. We can always arrange Bundala or Lunugamvehera instead.

What to book when

Lake View rooms sell out first over Christmas and New Year — six months ahead is not unusual. For May to September, four to six weeks is generally plenty.
